Ship Simulator 2008

From the site "Ship Simulator is a revolutionary simulation game that puts players at the Helm of some of the most varied and detailed ships to be found at sea." I had tried the previous version and had a look at this one - being involved in the simulation program for the CCGA itīs always interesting to look at related concepts...

Granted what we are working on is a real simulator designed for training and not a flashy game like this - but there are some common ideas. Ship Simulator 2008 has fairly nice graphics but, as one might expect, it lacks a lot in the realism department. Most game-level simulators are designed for fun with flashy graphics and cool sounds - and this one is no exception.

All that said it is a fun game and anyone interested in "things marine" will probably like it. The ships are very realistic in their graphics but their movement (especially the small Fast ones) isnīt quite there yet. This seems to be the major problem facing all small vessel simulators. For our part we donīt care too much because you donīt really need to train people in Boat handling in a simulator - you just use a real Boat. We focus on Navigation training - restricted visibility and high-risk situations. Unfortunately the game falls short of providing accurate Navigation tools in this area and as such remains firmly in the "game" category.

Never the less - itīs something many here may find interesting - so if you want to have a look, you can access the Ship Simulator site for more information.
